Probably like a lot of people I try to avoid getting power lines in my photos as they do tend to spoil a nice shot. I took a couple of the power lines outside our house yesterday but didn't particularly like any of them. I knew I would be heading into Beenleigh first thing this morning and there's a power station there with lots of power lines, so that was my destination for this prompt. Surprisingly I ended up with a few that I quite liked, but this one I think probably had the nicest composition with leading lines. I also found that I much preferred the power lines photos that I took once I had converted them to some type of desaturated colour - maybe because it made the lines a stronger focal point.

Morning Sun: Daybreak | Dawn | Beginning Running behind with getting the daily photo up again - this one is from yesterday. I was in the middle of having breakfast when I checked what the prompt was for the day - Morning Sun. That was the end of breakfast. I thought I had better get in and take some photos before I lost the morning sun and its lovely light. I used my macro lens and wandered around the yard taking photos of the different flowers with the morning sunlight on them. The only problem was that because I took so many it became hard to choose which one to use. I decided to go with this one as I liked the blurring of the flowers in the background and the subtle green lines created by the blurred leaves. The other problem was that my cereal was a little soggy Today's prompt is Power lines, something I usually try to avoid in my photos. I did take some this afternoon but wasn't particularly happy with them and have another idea that I'll try tomorrow. I did, however, find a gorgeous feather that had a few drops of water on it and decided to take some photos of that as well. This was all happening quite late and the sun was rapidly going down. I managed to find a spot in the yard near the chicken coop that still had some golden light on it and I played around with some shots. I will upload those tomorrow morning.
Now dinner is done, the blog updated so it must be time for some chocolate and NCIS. Hope you have a wonderful weekend ahead of you. Sugar And Spice: Contradiction | Comparison | Sweet And Precious
I decided to literally use sugar and spices for today's prompt. I put out a teaspoon of sugar, some fennel seeds, turmeric and paprika and took some macro shots. Originally I had the sugar and spices arranged in piles, but it looked quite boring, so I started to mix them bit by bit taking photos along the way, trying to find an arrangement that looked interesting. When I uploaded the photos the ones that were mixed were definitely more striking. I quite like how this does show some comparisons between the square grains of sugar and the more rounded spices and then the seeds are a completely different shape again. I also like the variety of colour. Wow, day 260. Not long to go to the end of 2013. And with that thought in mind, it must be time for some serious relaxing. Hope whatever you're doing is making you happy! On A Board: Balanced | Cutting | Moving
Last week I went to my first ballet class in about 9 years. It was given by Li Cunxin (Mao's Last Dancer). He was the guest teacher for the classes run by Queensland Ballet Company and open to the public. We were in a studio that had a timber floor. The classes were fantastic fun. I went again this week and thought that I could utilise the timber floor for the prompt. However, we ended up in a different studio which had the proper dance flooring providing a non-slip yet smooth surface. I still grabbed a couple of photos in between classes for the prompt. The teacher did look at me strangely when I grabbed out my DSLR, got down on the floor and started taking some quick shots. It's really good to be using the body in this way again, but boy does it remind me that I am no longer a fit and flexible 20 year old! What's In Your Bag?: Contents | Lined Up | Inside Out
I don't tend to carry very much in my bag as I don't like a heavy bag hanging over my shoulder for any length of time. Therefore I've cut it to the bare minimal - my wallet, iPhone, some loose change I found in an inside pocket, a pair of earrings in the same pocket (I wondered where they had gone to) and a pen (but no notebook). I sometimes carry my iPad to read on the train if I'm travelling, otherwise it stays at home. An altogether boring collection. How I relax: Quiet | Calm | Sunday First things first. Yesterday morning we had quite heavy fog when I got up to have my coffee and go for a walk with the dogs. Walking along the pony trail beside our house I noticed that all the spider webs were sparkling from the dew drops that were left behind from the fog. After breakfast I grabbed my camera and went in search of some photo opportunities with my macro lens. The little white flowers really are quite small, possible 3mm, and are from my basil plant (which needs pruning). The photo that below shows dewdrops caught on a spider web. I have rotated the image to show the cubby house that has been reflected in each of the drops. It isn't as sharp as I'd like it, but I'm still happy with it. It's quite hard to hand hold a macro lens and also deal with the breeze. And now onto the daily prompt. I was contemplating what it is that I do to relax, and really, I basically enjoy most things (well apart from housework!), but I do find it relaxing to be out watering plants, playing with the dogs, checking the chickens, taking photos. So I guess for me it came down to what I do at the end of the day when all the day's work has been completed. A row of dark chocolate, an episode or two of NCIS or another series, followed by reading a book on the kindle app on my iPad. Typical: Quintessential | Classic | Regular
Today was one of those prompts where we are encouraged to put ourselves into the picture. Not being a great fan of self portraits, I don't look forward to these kind of prompts. I did consider setting up the camera on a tripod and taking a photo of me watering the plants, but I was a bit concerned about the camera being accidentally knocked over by either the dogs, or the hose as I moved it around. Also, that really isn't a typical activity for me - it's just to get the new plants established while we wait for the rains to come. However, the daily email did suggest that we could photograph just one part of ourself, so that's what I went with. This is definitely a typical scene at our place in the afternoons. Bella was quite a cooperative model as I moved her around so that I could get the sun behind her to give a bit of a glow around her. She was also waiting very patiently for me to throw the ball. Meanwhile, I'm trying to get the focus on my hand and the ball with Bella in the background, and then take the shot one handed. I actually don't mind how it turned out. Anyway that's it for me. Hope that Saturday treated you well and that tomorrow will be even better. Night for now. On The Table: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner
No photos of a beautifully set table with an amazing food spread for today's photo, unfortunately. This is really what is on our dining room table at the moment, and probably for another couple of days. A little while ago we had the large window in our bedroom replaced by a sliding glass door. Rather than let the window go to the dump, we decided to reuse it. We have an office in one corner of our shed with a small window, so we thought we would take out the small window and replace it with the larger one. The builder came early this morning to do the job. Everything needed to be taken out of the office yesterday afternoon because of the possibility of being covered by dust and other debris. Most things were able to be put in cupboards and drawers, but we moved the electronic gear into the house. Can you tell we are a Mac house? It's amazing how much of a difference the larger window makes. I've just been down to have a look and not only does it let a lot more light in, it now gives us a nice view (the other window was quite high) and more breeze. The plan is to now reuse the smaller window in the workshop part of the shed - again for more light and breeze. Details of the Day: Food | Feet | Flowers
Another day where I haven't spent as much time as I would have liked thinking of something interesting to photograph for the daily prompt. It wasn't until dinner time that I was wandering around wondering what on earth to use for my photo. I figured the knife block was as good as anything. I like the focus and narrow depth of field in this photo, but I think the bottom one probably relates more to the prompt of detail than the first. I'm also doing this on the laptop and am discovering just how much I miss the editing capabilities of Lightroom. Hopefully once we finish all the planting and work around the garden I'll be able to spend a little more time with my photography ... Night all. On The Schedule: Observance | Appointments | Errands
I didn't really give a lot of thought to the prompt for today, but I did try a few different things, none of which I particularly liked. In the end I decided to take a photo of the Translink timetable at the train station in Beenleigh. I was heading out to meet up with Steve and some of his work colleagues for dinner and because Steve already had a car in the city, I decided to go in by train. Seeing that this isn't a typical time for me to be catching the train, I had to check the schedule to find out what time the train left. Hence, the relevance of the photo to what was happening in my life on the day. It was also taken using my iPhone and edited to black and white in Lightroom. We tried a new restaurant in Southbank called Siam. The food was very good and the setting quite lovely, as it was away from the road and overlooked the Southbank parklands. They also had a good range of vegetarian options. Definitely one to go back to another evening. |
