I spent part of the day in Innisfail with my mum and we drove down to where we used to live to have lunch. This beach is at Flying Fish Point. The constant erosion has dramatically decreased the shore line, as can be seen by the trees in the distance that have succumbed to the power of the sea. What looks like rocks on the right hand side is actually the roots of a large tree. The beach foreshore used to be where the roots now are, if not further out. It is both sad and frightening to see what is happening and to wonder how much more beach the sea will claim without human intervention.
Frightful: Unpleasant | Shocking | Gruesome I spent part of the day in Innisfail with my mum and we drove down to where we used to live to have lunch. This beach is at Flying Fish Point. Walking back from dinner last night I decided to take a photo of the rather strangely lit trees that form a tunnel of sorts through which people stroll. I'm not sure that bright red, blue and green lights give a soothing or natural effect. Anyway I played with the photo on the iPhone and added a few effects. Not convinced that I like it though. Perhaps this one would have been better?

A Mask: Covering | Creepy | Fun
I find it difficult to always keep up with the daily prompts when I'm away and this was a prompt I missed. Actually I didn't even take a photo yesterday - very unusual for me these days. I will have to remedy that today. It's lovely to be back in Cairns, if only for a short time, and we're enjoying the weather and the gorgeous scenery that Cairns is so well known for. We found time to go for a drive around yesterday and very little seems to have a changed; a few new buildings and businesses, but most things appeared to be the same. The esplanade and Holloways are as beautiful as ever. Last night we caught up with our previous neighbours for dinner and laughed and talked for hours. It's wonderful how easy it is to slip back into old friendships after two years away. Today's prompt is Frightful and then we will be finished with the Halloween theme. We then move into Gratitude month. It will be interesting to see what the prompts are and how they fit into the theme. I have added the November list so that you too can follow along. Once upon a time I used to print the monthly list so that I knew what was coming up; now I just open the email first thing in the morning to find out :-) Ghostly: Dark | Eerie | Unnatural
Can you depict a theme running through the daily prompts lately? While those in the Northern Hemisphere might be getting ready for Halloween, it's never been a part of my life experience so it's been interesting doing these prompts. After a busy day getting organised to travel to Cairns (for a conference and my mother's 80th birthday) I had little time or opportunity to set up a shot for the prompt. We went for a walk along the esplanade and I just kept an eye out for something that could potentially be a good subject. These are the roots of a strangler fig tree. From this photo I added two effects from DistressedFX (an app on my iPhone) and then played a little when I imported it into iPhoto (no Lightroom on the laptop). As this was the only photo I took, I was happy enough with how it turned out. Wide Open: Small F/# | 1.8 | Not Narrow
This prompt was about using a small aperture number on the camera. What this does is give a very narrow area of a subject that is in focus and blurs the rest of the image. In this photo I have focused around the hole in the skull which falls in the centre of the image. Because of the narrow depth of field the area in the foreground and then in the background are blurred, as is everything in the distance. The amount of blur is also dependent on how far away the camera is from the subject, as well as the distance from the subject to the background. I found this skull many years ago - and when I stop to think how many years ago it was, I figure it's better not to know! I have no idea what type of animal this came from but I have carried it around with me and it sits on one of my display shelves - along with my bird's nest and snake skin. Spectacular: Colour | Leaves | Nature
When I saw today's prompt of spectacular, I knew that I wanted to use the photo I took the other afternoon of that amazing, coloured sky during sunset (24.10.13). It just seems to be so appropriate. This did not mean that I wouldn't take any photos today. I thought it would be a nice opportunity to take some macro shots and then have a little play in Lightroom. Here are some of my favourites from today. Some are just waiting for an inspirational quote! Next To Something: A Post | A Car | A Tree
Ok, well as you can see, I didn't actually do the prompt for today. Actually I didn't really have much time to play around with photography and Steve was out all day, so he wasn't around to help. The daily prompt and inspirational email was about portraiture and how using a prop (car, post, tree and so on) can help your subject feel more relaxed when having photos taken. That just wasn't happening today. The only photos I did take were of Zimi playing with a rather large plastic container and doing his best to get the lid off. He really had to work hard, but he did eventually get it off. I was having a coffee with Steve and Zimi was hassling me to go play, so that's when I gave him the container to play with. The photos were taken on the iPhone and it didn't seem to cope with the dark shadow were Zimi was. I have attempted some post production work in Lightroom, but haven't been able to achieve a result that I'm happy with. However, he was next to us - does that count? Probably not, but that's all I managed for the day. Follow Behind: Shadow | Trail | Observe
Can you tell that the children have just been let out of school? I was visiting my grandson's classroom this afternoon as part of their 'grandparent' day. Technically, I guess, I'm not his real grandmother, but in a blended family such as ours, we cannot see the need to make such distinctions, and I am Abuela (which is Spanish for grandmother). Suddenly we now have four grandchildren. Anyway, grandparent day was a lot of fun as Justin and I got involved me to various activities and talked about what he was doing. It was lovely to be part of his day. I had decided earlier to take a photo of a real life activity for this prompt knowing that I would be at the school, and used my iPhone to take the photo. This is Justin and his older brother on their way out of school on a Friday afternoon. I just had to share tonight's sunset.
I was doing some emails, looked up and noticed how stunning the sky looked. Where was the camera? Down in the office. So a mad race down to grab the camera. I had the macro lens on, which isn't ideal for a landscape photo, but took one photo anyway. Thank goodness I did because by the time I had changed lenses the colours had just about disappeared. The sky looked like this right across - simply stunning. No editing has been done to this photo and these are exactly the colours I saw. Amazing! With Stripes: Socks | A Shirt | A witch
While Steve does have a lot of shirts with stripes, they didn't actually inspire me in any way to take a photo of them. I did have a look and considered what I could do, but then remembered my trustworthy fairy had stripy socks and shirt. She has now featured in three of the daily photo prompts. These were taken where she lives in the office; beside my computer and hanging from the handle of an overhead cupboard. She's lived there for two years now, with a short trip to the pool area for a photo shoot, and one down to the fruit trees for another shoot (spinning). She has had a bit of a rough time where she lives, and somewhere along the way she lost one of her wings, and also suffers from a broken shoulder and ankle. However, she's not about to go anywhere soon and is a lovely reminder of my sister-in-law. She had a selection hanging in her kitchen window when we visited a few years back, and I commented on how lovely they were. She very generously gave this one to me . As is often the case, I have a couple that I like and haven't decided which one I prefer yet. I like the bokeh in the first shot and the focus on the socks with the rest of the fairy blurred, and I like the softness of the second one. A fresh look tomorrow and I'll decide then. Meanwhile I'm getting rather hungry so I should start making the pizza I am having for dinner. Have a good one whatever you are doing! |

This is not good. I can never remember where I found them. Not to mention how time consuming they can be ...
