The idea is to place the point of interest on one of the intersections. It serves to lead the eye into the photo and allow it to wander and helps to give the photo a sense of balance and movement. You'd be surprised at how often photos are composed like that once you start looking for it.
Anyway as it was late and dark I went for a fairly simple shot - I would have done something different if it was daylight, or I had more time. Never mind, next time.
